A salmonella outbreak connected to recalled cucumbers has sickened nearly four dozen people across 18 U.S. states, according to federal health officials. The contaminated cucumbers were distributed to a wide range of locations, including grocery stores like Target, as well as hospitals, restaurants, and cruise ships. The cucumbers in question were produced by Bedner Growers in Florida and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. The products were sold between April 29 and May 19.

Hospitalizations Rise as Multiple Cruise Ships and States Report Salmonella Cases

At least 16 individuals have been hospitalized due to the outbreak. Notably, illnesses have been reported among passengers on six different cruise ships that departed from U.S. ports between late March and mid-April. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the actual number of cases is likely much higher and that the outbreak could extend to more states as investigations continue.

In response to the outbreak, several companies have issued recalls for whole cucumbers and food products containing them, such as sandwiches and salsas. Target, one of the retailers involved, has pulled dozens of items from its shelves, including vegetable rolls, salads, and whole cucumbers. These recalls aim to prevent further illnesses as health officials work to trace the distribution of contaminated produce.

Ongoing Sanitation Issues at Farms Raise Alarms Amid Recurring Salmonella Outbreak Investigation

This outbreak follows a similar salmonella incident in 2024 that affected over 550 people in 34 states and Washington, D.C. During that earlier investigation, untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers and Thomas Produce Company was found to be contaminated with salmonella. The recent cases were discovered during a follow-up inspection in April, suggesting ongoing issues with farm sanitation practices.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected the outbreak strain of Salmonella in cucumbers at a distribution center in Pennsylvania. Several additional strains were also identified, which match entries in the CDC’s pathogen database. Health officials continue to examine whether more illnesses are connected. Salmonella infections typically cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and stomach cramps. While most people recover without treatment, severe cases can lead to hospitalization, especially in vulnerable populations like children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems.
