The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning regarding a range of Jolly Rancher sweets, produced by the US-based Hershey Company, stating they are “unsafe to eat”. The alert highlights that several of these products contain harmful chemical compounds that are non-compliant with UK food safety laws.

These compounds, specifically mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) and mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH), are commonly used in confectionery manufacturing but pose potential long-term health risks.

DNA-Damaging Chemicals Found in Sweets Raise Long-Term Cancer Risk, Warns FSA

MOAH, in particular, is categorized as a genotoxic carcinogen, meaning it can damage DNA and potentially increase the risk of cancer if consumed over extended periods in significant quantities. While the FSA reassures the public that the immediate health risk from consuming the products is low, it emphasizes that no level of exposure to MOAH is considered completely safe. MOSH, though less hazardous, still raises health concerns when ingested regularly.

These chemical compounds are used in the manufacturing of sweets to enhance their appearance and texture—MOAH and MOSH help reduce stickiness and give the candies a glossy finish. Despite these functional purposes, their presence in food products sold in the UK is considered illegal under current food safety regulations. The FSA’s concern stems from long-term exposure rather than occasional consumption.

Despite Recall Efforts, Some UK Stores Still Selling Banned Jolly Rancher Sweets

The Hershey Company has reportedly been collaborating with UK authorities since 2024 to remove the affected products from the market. However, some UK businesses have continued to import and sell the products in defiance of the ongoing efforts. The affected items include Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher ‘Misfits’ Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Ranchers Berry Gummies.

The FSA is advising consumers who have purchased any of the listed products to avoid consuming them and dispose of them at home. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to report any concerns to their local Trading Standards or environmental health departments. The agency has also instructed enforcement authorities to urgently contact businesses stocking the affected sweets and take necessary action to ensure their removal from the market.
