Costco is set to open a new standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, by spring. The city has approved the removal of a former Bed Bath & Beyond store to make space for the project. Uniquely, this station will be exclusive to Costco members and will not include a convenience store—differentiating it from traditional gas stations. It will be located at 25732 El Paseo, in the Mission Viejo Freeway Center, conveniently just off Interstate 5.

New Mission Viejo Station Offers Convenience, Competitive Prices, and High Fueling Capacity

The new location, just 2.5 miles from the Laguna Niguel Costco warehouse, aims to alleviate congestion at nearby stations. The Mission Viejo site will house 40 fuel pumps, indicating the retailer’s commitment to serving high volumes efficiently. Despite the close proximity to another Costco, this standalone model emphasizes accessibility and convenience for members without the need to visit a full warehouse.

Fuel prices in California are notably high, with statewide averages around $4.61 per gallon. However, Costco has consistently undercut the average, offering gas at $4.35 per gallon at its Laguna Niguel location. By providing more competitive prices, the new station could become an attractive option for budget-conscious members seeking relief from high fuel costs in the area.

Extended Hours and Lower Prices Drive Record Fuel Sales and Member Satisfaction

Costco’s investment in standalone fuel stations comes at a time of peak demand. CEO Ron Vachris noted during the company’s Q3 earnings call that April saw two of the highest gas sales weeks in U.S. company history. This surge was attributed to expanded hours, additional fuel station openings, and overall lower prices, signaling strong member response to Costco’s fuel initiatives.

In response to growing demand, Costco extended gas station hours earlier this year. A February Facebook post detailed new operating times, including a 6 a.m. opening on all days and extended closing hours throughout the week. These changes have reportedly led to improved station usage and positive feedback from members, further justifying the company’s push toward increased fuel access.
