Marvel is no stranger to spinning comics and graphic novels into movies that are alluring to the audience yet somehow retain their original essence. Hence it comes as no surprise to us that it seems to have done just that with Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings, the cinematic universe’s 2021 venture.
True to its name, the movie revolves around its namesake Shang-Chi- a Marvel superhero of Asian descent. Originally created in graphic novel form by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, the movie adaptation will see Marvel’s first attempt to bring an Asian lead to the big screen.
The movie features popular names like Simu Liu and Ronny Cheng, with Awkwafina being one of the cast’s best-recognized faces. Actor Tony Leung Chiu-Wai will also make his appearance as Mandarin, the leader of Ten Rings – an organization that Shang-Chi appears likely to fight in the movie that completed filming in October this year.
The plot follows Shang-Chi, who fights evil with his heightened senses, kung-fu abilities, and other superpowers. Fans are also excited over Nick Furys’ alleged cameo, which could only logically precede an invitation extended to Shang-Chi to join the Avengers. If these reports are true, it can be seen that with Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings, Marvel not only solidifies Asian representation in Hollywood – something that is incredibly important given the genre of the film and the wide range of audience it attracts world over – but would see the induction of its first-ever Asian Avenger.
When push comes to shove, the movie seems to have it all, to say the least. Right from the classic 70’s-comic-turned-into-a-film appeal to the promise of a brand new Avenger in the making, Shang-Chi has given Marvel fans something to look forward to in the coming year. After a brief delay in filming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the schedule for the film is back on track. All set to premiere on the 9th of July 2021 as part of MCU’s Phase Four, the movie is the talk of the hour at every circle that even vaguely entertains the topic of MCU, the cinematic universe, and anything pertaining to the same.
MCU’s fandom is one of the largest in the world and it is fair to say that Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings would be one of the biggest releases of 2021. After a tough time letting go of some much-beloved characters and dealing with heartbreak surrounding everything that happened in Phase Three, this would prove to be a fresh and welcome change that the fans not only want but also need and deserve. Alongside all of Marvels’ other eminent releases, like The Eternals, Black Widow, and Morbius, this film is one that a huge chunk of the fandom is rooting for. From what we know of Marvel and its fans, Shang-Chi could be the next big superhero that the world needs. The platform is now set for a new and exciting character to saunter in and take the world by storm. As we await the arrival of Shang-Chi in quiet yet palpable anticipation, we can only hope that the film lives up to its hype. That being said, this hero’s success can only be left for time to decide.
