Ever since the original Ghostbusters came out in 1984, come Halloween, we see several people running about with costumes from the movie. Just by looking at this, we can confirm that the film caused a cultural revolution and deeply affected the lives of generations to come.
Decades and multiple films later, these beloved characters are all set to return to our life with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a comedy/fantasy movie directed by Jason Reitman. Starring popular names like Finn Wolfhard, Bill Murray, Mckenna Grace, and Dan Aykroyd, the movie is all set to arrive in theatres on the 5th of March, 2021. A new installment in this series has always been in the minds of both the makers and the fans, but roadblocks to this arose time and again. With the 2016 spin-off starring an all-female lead cast not being received well on the screens, a third party’s talks to the series began. However, the movie faced yet another crisis with its postponement due to COVID19, but this time around, we can hope that we finally get to catch it in theatres in 2021.
The plot revolves around a family of three consisting of two children and their single mother, thirty years after the second film’s events in the series, Ghostbusters II (1989). After many earthquakes that leave them rattled, the family finally finds their secret link to the Ghostbusters of the past. The rest of the film follows the aftermath of this revelation. Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows through like the classic fantasy film of your dreams.
Talking about the film, star Finn Wolfhard says that the new installment (which is the fourth film in the franchise, overall) will stay close to the original Ghostbusters’ essence. This makes even more sense to us, looking at the fact that multiple stars from the original cast like Bill Murray, Annie Potts, and Dan Aykroyd (and a few others) are reprising their roles. Another not-so-tiny finishing touch that’s extremely exciting is that Jason Reitman is also the son of Ivan Reitman, director of the original films!
They say that the devil is in the details, and we cannot agree more. There are several tiny things that a filmmaker weaves together to make one beautiful tapestry of a film, and removing even one of these from the equation would be disastrous. Similarly, there are many factors relating to everything from the aesthetic to the plot to the cast and crew that make Ghostbusters the film it is. From what little that cast had to say about Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it seems like these details have been paid immense attention to by director Jason Reitman. If that is really the case, we can confidently say that the movie will do splendidly when it finally comes out next year.
Fans of Ghostbusters have been waiting for a film to do justice to the original films’ legacy and have been met with disappointment many times over. Ghostbusters: Afterlife fans and critics hope that they finally get what they have been rallying for ever since the second installment came out years ago. Although these expectations put immense pressure on the filmmakers to please fans, we are sure nothing is unmanageable.
Will Ghostbusters: Afterlife deliver? Watch this space to find out!
