The movie is the biopic of Muttiah Muralitharan and is titled as 800. The announcement for the movie was made on 13th October 2020. Within 24 hours of the news, the film got into controversies and got a lot of hate and negative response from the viewers.
The netizens are not happy with the decision of Vijay Sethupathi to portray Muttiah Muralitharan onscreen. They believe that Sri Lankans have oppressed the majority of Tamilians, and he is from that country. It will be disrespectful to all the Tamil community people if he plays the role.
As per reports, many people have said that it’s a well-known fact that Sri Lanka is responsible for the death of many Tamilians and also for treating them as minority people in their country and torturing them to death.
Many political leaders and celebrities from Tamil Nadu have shown their disappointment towards Sethupathi’s decision and have urged him to reconsider his decision. One of them is Director Seenu Ramasamy, who has requested the actor to review his decision and not to disappoint his fans and his people.
Despite such criticism and hatred towards the movie and the actor, the fans have come to his rescue. They claim that the actor has chosen to portray a cricketer’s life and all about his cricket journey and nothing else. They find no issue with the fact that an actor is ready to bring a cricketer’s life in front of the whole world without any political agenda or other controversies.

The movie’s title has been decided from the 800 wickets that the cricketer got in his career to embrace his excellent work. MS Sripathy will be the director of the movie. And the shooting is said to start in early 2021. And will be shot in different countries like UK, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, and many more countries. The movie shoots will also capture the beauty of these countries.
Also, the producers, after the criticism, issued a statement that they will make sure of the fact that no discriminatory remarks or acts have been showcased in the movie, and no sentiments of the people will be hurt. They gave their word to the viewers.
