The Last Duel: Ridley Scott film to drop in 2021

the last duel

It has been a while since the world has witnessed a full-length film that falls under the drama genre. This is because makers fear that it wouldn’t interest the public as much as work belongs to other genres. But this has not stopped director Ridley Scott from bringing you all the drama you could as for. That’s right; The Last Duel is finally set to premiere in 2021.

The movie follows the story of Jean de Carrouges, who challenges his friend to a duel after his voice accuses said the friend of assault. This event marks the last legally sanctioned duel in the country’s history. The screenplay of the film is written by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Nicole Holofcener.

What’s most exciting about this film at this moment is probably the cast. The movie features Matt Damon as Jean de Carrouges, Adam Driver as Jacques Le Gris, Jodie Comer as Marguerite de Carrouges, and Ben Affleck as King Charles VI. Apart from this, The Last Duel also has several other familiar faces playing multiple other characters. Watching the chemistry between these seemingly different characters and how it plays out on the big screen would be an extremely interesting experience for the audience. Since the movie features stars who have a well-established fandom there, we can say that the movie will have a good reception when it drops, no matter what the final verdict is.

Talks of the movie being made were underway ever since 2015, but it did not yield a concrete result until 2019 when director Ridley Scott finally decided to take the project up. Some of his previous projects include Blade Runner, Gladiator, and The Martian. It would be fair to say that the film has a cast of popular stars and Scott, who is someone who really does have a following of his own. Film enthusiasts are gearing up to see just how his filmmaking will mold this story that seems to be a trope that we have never really seen on screens before.

From the looks of it, the filming had taken place in various locations that look like something straight out of The Chronicles of Narnia environment (read: The Game of Thrones). The shooting went over various locations in Ireland, France, and other places in Europe. From what we can see, the aesthetic and coloring are extremely pleasant yet gloomy – something that is common with films based on this particular period in history.

The movie was initially scheduled for release on the 8th of January 2021, but it has not been pushed back to the 15th of October 2021 due to the COVID 19 crisis. This little postponement came as a disappointment to fans who eagerly await the premiere of The Last Duel. The most important factor to look out for when we finally get the chance to watch the film on the big screens is what arc or narrative the makers have decided to take up to showcase a storyline that might involve the intensity of the strongest sort. Will they play into it, making the movie one that is not everyone’s cup of tea but is still raw and original, or will they choose to work around it? We will have to watch the film to know.
